FIRST THINNING OF
CARROTS
Carrots grow very well even when close together. See our main
article for how
to thin carrots.
Carrot fly can be a major problem for carrots and
those flies are attracted by thinnings. So thin your carrots early
in the morning or late in the afternoon when the carrot flies are
not about. The next carrot task is here.

Dispose of the seedlings well away from the site
where your carrots are growing and gently firm down any soil
disturbed by the thinning process.

PLANT ONION SETS
Onion sets are far more reliable compared to onion seeds and
they establish quicker. The only advantage onion seeds have over
sets is that the range of varieties to choose from is far larger.
For the beginner however, we would recommend onion sets every time.
Our favourite variety (widely available as onion sets) is Red Baron.
A lovely colour in salads, they cook and keep well.
See our main article on planting onion sets in
raised beds and containers
here.
SOW ONION SEED
Sow onion seed in rows 2½cm / 6in apart.

SOW TOMATO SEEDS INDOORS You need to
plan ahead to sow tomatoes indoors at the correct time. Too early
and the plants will take up too much room, too late and your
tomatoes may not ripen fully. See
our article
on how and when to sow tomato seeds for the best chance of success.

weekly diary by clicking here for the
next step.
