HOW TO TELL WEEDS AND SEEDLINGS APART
Telling vegetable seedlings and small weeds apart can often be a problem. The best way to avoid this problem is to sow your vegetables seeds in line and then the vegetables will be easy to spot from the weeds.

It's easy when you know how!

FIRST SOWING OF BEETROOT
Baby beetroot are the tastiest of all, just look at the prices in the shops! With raised beds we cram them in and harvest them young at their sweetest.

Many gardeners soak their beetroot seed in water for an hour or so before sowing. The idea behind this practice is to remove the chemicals the seed companies apply to beetroot seed to stop them germinating before you buy them. Our advice is, if you have the time do this, but if not don't bother. Just make sure you water the soil after you have sown the seed.

Beetroot seed germinate reasonably well when sown in a raised bed so place one seed in the soil about 2cm / ¾in apart at a depth of 2cm / ¾in. Cover over the seeds and gently pat the soil over the seeds. Water well and leave them well alone. The seedlings should emerge in seven to ten days, they normally have a reddish tinge to the leaves.

It's best sow beetroot over six weeks or so to ensure you get the maximum cropping period. Click here for when to sow your next beetroot seeds and also when to start thinning out the seedlings out.

SUSAN'S ADVICE
Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary, basil, sage and others grow very well containers and raised beds. We visited the National Herb Centre and asked which soil they used for growing their herbs. They use simple multi-purpose compost almost all the time and this is their recommendation. In general herbs thrive on a slightly dry poor soil so don't water or feed them  often.

FINAL SOWING OF PARSNIP SEED
This is about the last chance to successfully sow parsnip seed. Read our detailed easy-to-understand instructions here about sowing parsnip seed. For parsnips the next action will be to thin the seedlings. Full details on how to do this can be found here.

THIN CARROT SEEDLINGS
See our main article on thinning carrot seedlings for full details. Continue to sow more carrots next week here in our calendar.
